Stewardship Day, Nine Mile Canyon

Stewardship Day

Designed as one-day event held during the fall, members of the public are invited to tour pre-designated archaeological sites in Nine Mile Canyon.

Volunteer site stewards accompany professional archaeologists at each site, providing visitors the opportunity to learn about the canyon’s natural and cultural history, specifically emphasizing the ideas of preservation and protection. There is also an activity area for experiential education, demonstrations of primitive living skills, and presentations on Ute cultural traditions.

Research has shown a correlation between an increase in visitation to cultural sites and an increase in the probability of vandalism to those sites. The Nine Mile Canyon Coalition believes that education is paramount to prevent these types of destructive activities, and for the continued protection of the archaeological treasures in Nine Mile Canyon and elsewhere.
